Local male believed to have drowned at Lake Red Rock - UPDATE

Pella — On Sunday, July 22, approximately at 3:25 p.m. the Marion County Sheriff's Office received a 911 stating that a man has possibly drowned at Lake Red Rock.

According to the sheriff's office, Derek Long, 25, is believed to be the individual believed to have drowned. 

Long and family members were riding in a pontoon boat when a child who had been swimming nearby began to float away. Long entered the water in an attempt to bring the child back to the boat at which time he went under water and never resurfaced. A search was conducted throughout the afternoon and into the evening, which was unsuccessful. A search for the victim will resume this morning (Monday).

Agencies involved in the search yesterday included the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Pella Fire, Pella Ambulance, Marion County Emergency Management, Pleasantville Fire, Department of Natural Resources, Mercy Two Helicopter, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Iowa State Patrol.
