Man killed in conflict with deputies

KEOSAUQUA — A Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed man on Highway 2 east of Cantril Tuesday.

At approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to numerous 911 reports of a male subject wearing a military uniform and armed with a rifle walking westbound along the highway. The subject was making obscene gestures at passing motorists.

When deputies arrived at the subject’s location, the male subject was ordered to drop his firearm. At that time, the subject pointed the firearm at the deputies. Due to the subject’s actions, he was fatally shot by one of the responding sheriff’s deputies.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The subject’s name is not being released at this time pending the notification of family members.
