Appanoose Co. man charged with multiple drug offenses

CENTERVILLE — A Centerville man faces multiple felony charges connected to what authorities describe as an effort to grow and sell marijuana.

Richard Corben Hayes, 23, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, a Class C felony; possession of marijuana second or subsequent offense, a Class D felony; and three counts of delivery of a schedule I controlled substance, marijuana, a Class D felony.

The combined charges carry a potential of up to 30 years in prison, though that would require each charge to be served consecutively.

The charges were filed after a monthlong investigation and execution of a search warrant at 17409 Highway J29 in Appanoose County. Investigators found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, scales, cash and other evidence. Officers also located a homemade explosive device in the residence. The Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted and an agent was sent to the scene to dispose of the device.
