Poll shows Loebsack lead in 2nd District

OTTUMWA — Poll data from Iowa's Second Congressional District shows a lead for incumbent Dave Loebsack, but enough undecided voters to tip the race.

Loebsack, a three-term democratic congressman, is running for re-election against Republican John Archer. The polling, conducted by The Tarrance Group on behalf of Archer's campaign, shows Loebsack with 48 percent of those polled to 43 percent for Archer.

Ten percent of those polled are undecided, more than enough to swing the election. The poll surveyed 400 likely voters in the district and has a margin or error of 4.9 percent.

Iowa's 2nd District, like the other congressional districts, is heading into its first election since being redrawn after the 2010 census.

The poll also asked about Loebsack's job approval and whether he deserves re-election. It found 43 percent approved of Loebsack's job as a representative, with 23 percent disapproving. More than a third of people, 35 percent, were unsure of their response.

Poll respondents split on whether Loebsack deserves re-election, with 33 percent saying he does, 29 percent said they are unsure, and 38 percent want a new representative.
