COLUMN: Question of the Week: Are John Kerry’s remarks being blown out of proportion?

Most people answering last week’s Question of the Week think that Halloween is a harmless holiday. Of 52 people who responded to the question: “Is Halloween a harmless holiday?” 41 — 78.85 percent — said “Yes” while 11 — 21.15 percent — said “No.”

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s question deals with Jon Kerry’s remarks about education he made Monday while campaigning for Democrats in California.

The Associated Press reports that Kerry told a community college audience: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

White House press secretary Tony Snow said Kerry’s comments were an “absolute insult.”

“Senator Kerry not only owes an apology to those who are serving, but also to the families of those who’ve given their lives in this,” Snow said. “This is an absolute insult.”

The controversy over Kerry’s comments prompted Iowa Democrat Bruce Braley, who is running in Iowa’s 1st District congressional race, to cancel a campaign appearance with Kerry. Also, Kerry has canceled campaign stops in Minnesota and Pennsylvania.

A Kerry spokesman said, “We made a decision not to allow the Republican hate machine to use Democratic candidates as proxies in their distorted spin war.”

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Are John Kerry’s remarks being blown out of proportion? Yes or No.
