COLUMN: Question of the Week: Do you think our campuses are safe?

A majority of the people who answered last week’s Question of the Week — Is the 2,000-foot law a good law? — said “No.”

Thirty — 58.82 percent — said “No” while 21 — 41.18 percent — answered “Yes.”

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s question deals with the aftermath of the tragic shooting deaths at Virginia Tech University.

Deranged student Cho Seung-Hui perpetrated the worst mass murder in American history Monday morning when he killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech University campus before killing himself. He used two 9 mm handguns in his murderous rampage that started around 7:15 a.m. and continued about two hours later. In the interim, he mailed photos and a videotaped message to NBC news before walking across campus to continue the bloodbath.

Virginia Tech officials have come under criticism for not warning the public in a more timely manner. University officials sent a mass email out just before the second round of shooting began.

Locally, the Oskaloosa Police Department trains its officers to deal with such “active shooter” scenarios as does the sheriff’s department. William Penn University officials are studying their own emergency management procedures in light of the events at Virginia Tech. Vennard College has several ways it can alert its student body in case of such emergencies.

Are we prepared locally in case, God forbid, something similar should happen here? What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Do you think our campuses are safe? Yes or No.

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
