Question of the Week: Has U.S. policy succeeded in Iraq?
OSKALOOSA — By a more than 7-1 margin, those readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Do you support a ban on texting while driving? said YES.
Thirty-nine — 88.64 percent — said YES while five — 11.36 percent — answered NO.
The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.
This week’s Question of the Week deals with Iraq.
This past weekend, millions of Iraqis went to the polls to elect lawmakers to the parliament. Insurgents killed 36 in attacks that were mainly centered in Baghdad.
No one coalition is expected to win an outright majority in the 325-seat parliament so the coalition that gets the largest number of votes will be tasked with cobbling together a government with other partners — possibly a tough task for al-Maliki who has angered parties across the political spectrum during his nearly four years in office. But in Iraq’s freewheeling democracy, no one believes that any political alignment is off the negotiating table, the Associated Press reported.
President Barack Obama said from the rose garden at the White House that Iraqis and their government must remain on guard during “the long constitutional process” that follows as lawmakers take their seats in parliament to choose a prime minister and approve the new government.
He says that process will take “not weeks, but months” and the danger of violence remains. Obama is sticking to the Aug. 31 deadline to have all combat forces out of Iraq, the AP reported.
Has Iraq turned a corner? Has U.S. policy worked?
