OSKALOOSA — A majority of those readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Will the Hawkeyes beat Michigan? said YES.
Twenty-four — 63.16 percent — answered YES while 14 — 36.84 percent — said NO.
The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.
This week’s Question of the Week deals with President Barack Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
Friday, the Nobel selection committee awarded the peace prize to Obama. The members have come under criticism for their decision.
Columnist Thomas Friedman wrote in the New York Times that Obama “has not done anything yet on the scale that would normally merit such an award.”
“We simply disagree that he has done nothing,” committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland told the AP on Tuesday. “He got the prize for what he has done.”
They cite Obama’s work to repair the rift between the West and the Muslim world. Also, Obama’s work to scale down a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe played a part in the decision.
The decision stunned even the most seasoned Nobel watchers. They hadn’t expected Obama, who took office barely two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline, to be seriously considered until at least next year.
“Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations,” Obama said Friday in the White House Rose Garden. “To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize.”
