Question of the Week: Can Obama get the Middle East peace process back on track?

OSKALOOSA — A majority of those readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Did Obama make a good choice with Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court? said NO.

Twenty-seven — 38.57 percent said YES while 43 — 61.43 percent — answered NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the Middle East peace process.

President Obama this past week traveled to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Europe to push the Middle East peace process back on track.

He stopped in Saudi Arabia and Egypt to meet with leaders and give a speech to set a new tone in American diplomacy and try to heal rifts with the Muslim world over issues such as Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and U.S. support of Israel, the Associated Press reported.

Obama also is getting support from European leaders such as France’s Nicholas Sarkozy on issues such as stopping Israeli settlements on the West Bank and pressuring Iran on its nuclear program. Obama is sending his envoy — former Sen. George Mitchell to the Middle East this week to meet with Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinians and Iranian ally Syria. Through Syria, Obama could possibly speak to the leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian organization vehemently opposed to Israel’s existence.

Is this enough to get the peace process going again? Is the Middle East too big of a mess to clean up?

What do you think?
