Question of the Week: Were you ready for the switch to DTV?

OSKALOOSA — A majority of those who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Can Obama get the Middle East peace process back on track? answered NO.

Seventeen — 36.96 percent — said YES while 29 — 63.04 percent — answered NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the  opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the digital television conversion.

As of Friday, all analog television broadcasts ceased in the United States. Now, everything is broadcast in digital. While cable and satellite TV subscribers had nothing to worry about, people in rural areas who use TV aerials to receive broadcast TV signals needed to have a digital converter box installed to maintain their reception.

The Associated Press reported that the Federal Communications Commission received about 700,000 calls on its hot line from people who were confused about the conversion.

The move to digital TV was delayed from Feb. 17 to spread the word about the conversion. The AP reported that the FCC credits the delay with halving the number of calls federal officials expected.

The Commerce Department reported that there was a rush for $40 converter box coupons — it received 319,990 requests Thursday and another 428,198 requests Friday.

Were you prepared for the switch?
