Question of the Week: Is the state economy improving?

OSKALOOSA — It was a fairly close vote in this past week’s Question of the Week: Has U.S. policy succeeded in Iraq?

Seven — 38.89 percent — said YES while 11 — 61.11 percent — answered NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the state economy.

There’s some indication that the state economy should improve by the summer. The state’s Revenue Estimating Conference said that the extended economic decline is leveling out.

“We believe Iowa may be turning a corner, but we haven’t accelerated out of the turn yet,” said conference member Holly Lyons in an Associated Press report.

The REC estimate that the state will collect $5.40 billion in revenue by the end of the fiscal year on June 30 — about the same level that was predicted in December.

Conference member David Underwood cautioned that consumers will likely still pinch pennies as the economy improves, the AP reported.

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Is the state economy improving?
