OSKALOOSA — Mahaska Health Partnership will begin offering Diabetes WISE (Wellness In Self-management Education), a 10-hour program designed to improve the health and wellness of people with diabetes.
According to MHP Diabetes Educator Sharon Ferguson, RN, Diabetes WISE begins with a one-hour individual consultation, followed by three three-hour group classes. Morning classes are on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and will be held June 26, July 17 and July 31. Evening classes are scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be held June 24, July 15 and July 29.
“Participants need to attend all classes to get the best benefit,” Ferguson said. “We will have professional educators, including a dietitian, nurse educator and pharmacist, available to instruct individuals and their families on the basics of self-management.”
Ferguson recently completed training at the International Center for Diabetes in Minneapolis, Minn. She received intensive education to assist patients with diabetes in developing self-management skills. This will allow individuals to better monitor and treat their diabetes in conjunction with their physician.
According to Ferguson, a physician’s referral is required to attend the self management program. For more information or to register for the Diabetes WISE classes, contact Ferguson at (641) 672-3422.
