LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The prevailing wage law is in the public’s interest

Letter to the editor:

Please don’t be fooled by opponents of prevailing wage laws who claim that the cost of public project construction will increase. According to numerous studies, prevailing wage laws do not increase construction costs and actually result in the best possible finished product in return for the taxpayers’ investments.

This is because labor costs are not the key factor in determining the cost of an improvement. A recent study concluded that the cost of constructing elementary and middle schools in the states containing a prevailing wage law costs less per square foot than constructing the schools in non-prevailing wage law states. In fact, at best, there is no difference in square foot construction costs between comparable states with and without prevailing wage laws. In fact, Prevailing Wage laws have a positive impact on construction quality, labor markets, worker wages and construction costs.

I submit to you that in addition to protecting our local worker’s wages and employers, a prevailing wage law is in the public interest to ensure that public improvements are completed by the best means and highest quality of labor available. I urge all Iowa taxpayers to support the pending legislation that will provide Iowans the protection we deserve.
