Campus Ministries at Penn asks area churches to help welcome students to campus in the fall
OSKALOOSA — William Penn’s Campus Ministries is asking area churches to help welcome Penn students to campus in the fall. Community members are encouraged to participate in some of the university’s fall events and meet new and returning Penn students.
Student move-in day will be held Saturday, Aug. 22. Spencer Thury, campus minister at Penn, invites community members to bring treats and invite students and their families to attend a church in the area.
“Some of our students are new to town so we want to make sure they know they are wanted in the community and by God,” Thury said.
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, a Campus/Community Fair will be held in the Penn Activity Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Area churches are welcome to set up a booth to promote their church, give away care packages, treats or anything that may help a student during the year. To register your church to host a booth at the Campus/Community Fair, contact Chad Rodgers, director of student activities, at (641) 673-1024.
Also taking place on Wednesday, Aug. 26, Campus Ministries will host “Sundae Night” at 8 p.m. This is an evening opportunity for churches to introduce their ministry and pastor to Penn students and enjoy ice cream sundaes. William Penn’s praise band will also perform during the event.
Sept. 18 through 24 will be Spiritual Emphasis Week at Penn. A fall conference college ministry trip will take place Sept. 18 through 20 for Penn students. Special speakers will also be present during the week. On Sept. 23, “See You at the Pole” will be held on campus. This is an event recognized around the world and brings people of faith together, regardless of denomination, around school flag poles to unite in prayer.
Thury also invites community members to attend chapel services held throughout the year. Weekly chapel is at 11:10 a.m. every Thursday, with the exception of holidays and university breaks, in the student lounge of Dana M. Atkins Memorial Union.
“William Penn has partnered with area churches in the past, and I would love to have as many people involved as possible,” Thury said. “The community involvement gives students at William Penn University an opportunity to meet community members and find churches to attend on Sunday mornings.”
