OSKALOOSA —
Dog owners who want to support the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter can have fun with their pets and get some exercise on Oct. 13 at the inaugural K-9 5K at Edmundson Park.
Animal shelter staff members are holding the K-9 5K in lieu of the shelter’s traditional “Woofstock” fund-raiser. It will be held at the Kiwanis Shelter at Edmundson Park.
“We’re going to keep some of the Woofstock” activities, Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter Executive Director Lindsey Sime said. “It starts at 10 a.m. After the run is done, we’ll have refreshments.”
The event starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. Registration for the 5K that day is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
There will be a 5K run for dogs and their owners to complete. Also, if someone has a short-legged dog, there is a 1 mile walk/run for them to complete, Sime said.
After the run/walk is done, there will be the “Nine Lives Activity Path” for dog owners and their pets to enjoy.
“If you don’t want to run in the race, you can come at 11,” Sime said.
One of the activities after the 5K will be the Oskaloosa Police Department’s Radar Run for dogs. Also, there will be agility obstacles for dogs to tackle as well as hurdles to jump and tunnels to run through, Sime said. There will be a “Trick or Treat” event for dogs to do tricks for doggie treats, she added.
People can register from now up to the time of the K-9 5K. Pre-registration lasts from now through Sept. 26. People can call the animal shelter, come to the shelter or go to a vet clinic to sign up, or register online.
The cost to register is: individuals, $25; couples: $40; families, $20 per adult and $15 per child. If you are a cat person but also want to support the shelter, “catnappers” can pay $20 and receive a T-shirt, Sime said.
