Floating toward better health

OSKALOOSA — About 40 people took to the water for some exercise and to enjoy the scenery Saturday morning as part of a Live Healthy Iowa activity.

The Mahaska Wellness Coalition and the Mahaska County Conservation Board teamed up for the canoe float that began at Eveland Access on the Des Moines River at 9 a.m. Usually, the Mahaska Wellness Coalition sponsors a monthly walk or a hike. This time, they took to the waves.

“We’ve done all hikes before. This is our first canoe float,” Mahaska County Conservation Board Director Dave Sedivec said.

The group floated from Eveland Acess to the G-71 bridge on the highway to Bussey. It’s about a 5 1/2 to 6 mile course, which would take the group about 90 minutes to two hours to navigate, he said.

“I’m happy to see we have a lot of families,” Sedivec said as the group assembled their canoes and kayaks. “It’s going to be a good family event.”
