OSKALOOSA —
The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a revision of Surface Transportation Program funding for the Highway 63 environmental study at its meeting Monday.
The U.S. 63 Corridor Study identifies and documents locations for improvements on Highway 63 essential to economic grown in the area. Planning is underway to conduct an environmental study of the corridor from U.S. Highway 163 to U.S. Highway 6.
Mahaska County has allocated $130,000 toward the study and another $171,822 in “bridge” funding from the county to RPA 15 is needed to show the Iowa Department of Transportation that it is committed to the completion of the study.
Beth Danowsky of the Highway 63 Coalition told the supervisors that Cargill officials are willing to participate and they are talking to Poweshiek County officials about their support.
County Engineer Jerry Nusbaum said that as other partners show their financial support for the project, the bridge funding for Mahaska County will be reduced to $85,911.
