OSKALOOSA —
The smell of roasting corn wafted through the Oskaloosa square Thursday afternoon in preparation for Sweet Corn Serenade.
Beginning around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the corn used at Sweet Corn Serenade began to soak, said Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group Events Coordinator Karen Hafner. By 2 p.m. Thursday, it was ready for the Roast-O-Matic machine set up on the Oskaloosa square.
After just a few minutes in the roasting machine, the corn is ready to eat. Hafner noted that the Roast-O-Matic can handle 278 ears of corn at a time. The corn is usually gone by just after 7 p.m. each year, said Hafner adding that this year there were 240 dozen ears of corn to be roasted this year.
Craft and other food vendors could also be found on the Oskaloosa square Thursday.
The 37 craft vendors on the square is the maximum they can have, said Hafner.
“There is a lot of stuff out there, a lot of cool stuff,” said Hafner of the craft vendors.
Hafner said she likes seeing families come out to the square to enjoy Sweet Corn Serenade each year.
“Families come out — they sit and they eat — they enjoy the entertainment,” said Hafner, pointing out the other attractions for children such as the giant slide and climbing wall. “Kids love all the little stuff to do.”
Hafner went on to say she liked how the Sweet Corn Serenade is followed by the Oskaloosa City Band performance at 8 p.m.
“It’s kind of perfect,” she said.
