OSKALOOSA —
The Oskaloosa Chamber Music Festival is bringing back yet another energetic week of music making to the community.
This is the third consecutive year for OCMF. From May 15-20, 17 professional musicians from across the country will converge in Oskaloosa for concerts and educational opportunities for local student musicians. These musicians will give interactive presentations for elementary and middle school music students to get them excited about all of the possibilities that lie in music making.
They will also be working alongside high school students throughout the week in a side-by-side collaboration with the OCMF Chamber Players that will culminate in a performance at the end of the week.
In addition to these opportunities for local musicians, the OCMF Chamber Players will be rehearsing intensely on some of the greatest chamber music throughout history. They will be performing works by Mozart, Ravel, Dvorak, Bruch, Schubert and a brand new work written in 2011 by composer Schuyler Tsuda, who will be flying into Oskaloosa from his current post as composition professor at the University of Hawaii.
The week will culminate in two free public performances. The first will be Friday, May 18, at Smokey Row. This will be a very informal concert that is much more like a jam session than polished performance.
On Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 405 High Ave. E., there will be a formal concert of the aforementioned repertoire and the side-by-side piece with the high school students.
Both events are free and open to all, donations will be graciously accepted to help cover costs for the performers.
