Osky superintendent search continues

OSKALOOSA — Dr. Carolyn McGaughey announced she would retire as Oskaloosa Schools’ superintendent at the end of this school year back in November 2009.

Don Patterson, Oskaloosa School Board president, said the search for a new superintended began shortly after McGaughey’s announcement.

In an e-mail sent to the Herald Monday, Patterson said McGaughey has worked as Oskaloosa Schools’ superintendent for nine years, having had 11 prior years of superintendent experience, as well as teaching experience.

“She has done an outstanding job of providing ongoing leadership to the district, working to provide the best possible education for our students,” said Patterson in the e-mail.

Although the process of finding a new superintendent is underway right now, the number of applicants won’t be known until the school board’s March 1 meeting, said Patterson. He added, interviews for prospective superintendent candidates will be scheduled beginning March 8.

These candidates will be able to get familiar with the school board and administration, said Patterson.

“Candidates invited to interview tour the school facilities and meet with school board members as well as representatives from the administration, teachers, support staff and community,” said Patterson via e-mail. “Board members will also visit the communities of the finalists.”

Patterson said all candidates will be evaluated on a number of important qualities. Previous educational administration experience, leadership roles, awareness of legislative issues and knowledge of school finance will all be considered.

The search will have challenges, said Patterson.

“At this time, many school districts are seeking new superintendents due to retirements and excellent candidates are able to be selective,” Patterson said in his e-mail.
