OSKALOOSA —
It’s no cause for alarm, but it’s something Oskaloosa residents should know about their water.
According to a legal notice placed in The Oskaloosa Herald by the Oskaloosa Municipal Water Department, higher than normal “turbidity” or cloudiness rates were detected in the city’s water supply Feb. 16.
Although the drinking water standard was violated, a boil order was not necessary in this case, said Oskaloosa Water Department General Manager Chad Coon. The notice states that after thorough testing of the water, there were no disease-causing organisms in Oskaloosa’s drinking water.
“The water was safe to drink,” said Coon in a Herald interview Wednesday morning. “All the steps we did take were to maintain healthy water for our customers in the city.”
Coon explained that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires any water department with this issue to notify the public within 30 days of the incident. This particular instance was dubbed a “Tier 2” level of turbidity, explained Coon. He added, a “Tier 1” turbidity level would require a boil order and notification of the incident to the public within 24 hours.
Notices of the Tier 2 turbidity incident were sent via mass mailings to water customers and a notice had been placed on his department’s Web site, according to Coon.
