OSKALOOSA —
The Iowa Barnstormers are coming back to Oskaloosa in March and the city of Oskaloosa and William Penn University will welcome them with open arms.
The Des Moines-based Arena Football League team will come back to Oskaloosa on March 2 for their preseason training camp. They made their debut visit to William Penn University to use the Penn Activity Center facilities in 2012.
“We’re really excited to have them back,” William Penn University Vice President of Advancement Sherri Taylor said.
“This year is going to be a little bit different than last year,” William Penn Advancement Event Services and Conferencing Coordinator Sara Reck said. Due to the Arena Football League schedule and the state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in February, the Barnstormers will be in Oskaloosa in March, she added.
Also, this year, the Barnstormers will stay on-campus in the new dormitory building on North Market Street, Reck said. This past year, the team stayed in an off-campus hotel, she added.
During their 2012 stay in Oskaloosa, the Barnstormers participated in a Community Welcome event at Penn Central Mall after their first day of practice. Later in the week, they did a community night at the Peppertree restaurant and participated in an event at Mahaska Health Partnership. The team also held a rookie talent show as part of a fund-raising event for the Oskaloosa High School cardio room and they participated in an event at the Oskaloosa Christian School.
Reck said that she is currently working with Barnstormers General Manager John Pettit and Barnstormers Office Manager Shannon Saunders on the team’s evening event schedule for this year.
