C.L. Barnhouse CEO reflects on life of ‘Chuck’ Barnhouse

OSKALOOSA — His musical legacy will carry on in Oskaloosa and beyond.

Charles “Chuck” Barnhouse III, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at his home in Oskaloosa.

Barnhouse was an integral part of the C.L. Barnhouse Music Publishing Company in Oskaloosa. Charles, or “Chuck,” as he was known to many, started working for the family business in 1941. In 1957, Chuck and his brother, Robert, took over the operation of the business from their father, C.L. “Lloyd” Barnhouse Jr.

Chuck managed the creative side of the business, selecting the composers and music to be published. Chuck was the president of C.L. Barnhouse Music Publishing for many years, he semi-retired in 2001, but stayed involved in the company through most of 2011.

Andy Clark, current CEO of C. L. Barnhouse Music Publishing Company, began working alongside Chuck in the late 1980s. Clark, who said he considers Chuck to be a good friend whom he will miss greatly, noted Barnhouse’s ability to evaluate projects for the business. Clark also applauded Chuck for his extensive contacts in the industry.

“Chuck had been in the music publishing business all of his life and was certainly very well known in the music business,” said Clark in a Herald interview Tuesday morning.

Chuck’s complete obituary can be found in the “Obituaries” section of oskaloosa.com or in the Tuesday, Feb. 7, print edition of The Oskaloosa Herald.

A complete story on Chuck can be found in the Wednesday, Feb. 8, edition of the Herald.
