OSKALOOSA —
Kelly Wheeler, of Oskaloosa, was the first person in line Saturday morning to get tickets to see President Barack Obama.
Obama will visit Oskaloosa and make a campaign speech at the Nelson Pioneer Farm on Tuesday. Tickets became available for people to pick up at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“I was here at 6:33 when I sat down,” Wheeler said from her lawn chair near the front door of the Obama For American headquarters at 201 A Ave. E., Oskaloosa.
Wheeler wanted to be the first person in Mahaska County to get tickets.
“That was a definite goal of mine to be the first in line,” she said.
This is not the first time Wheeler has seen Obama speak in person.
“I was here at Smokey Row when he campaigned here in 2007,” she said. Wheeler got to shake Obama’s hand at that event.
“I thought this would be a nice follow-up,” she added.
Wheeler liked the Nelson Pioneer Farm venue for Obama’s Tuesday speech.
“I think that’s a good location for him,” she said.
Wheeler said she saw Hillary Clinton campaign there during the Democratic primary race in 2008.
“I have a sign that she signed,” Wheeler said. “I don’t have any Obama paraphernalia yet, maybe I’ll score some today.
“I’m so excited that the president has chosen Oskaloosa,” she said.
As of 10:25 a.m., the line of people waiting to get tickets to see President Barack Obama stretched east down the 200 block of High Avenue East and snaked around the corner of South Second Street.
