OSKALOOSA —
Oskaloosa police officers and Mahaska County sheriff’s deputies helped apprehend a wanted fugitive from Wapello County early Tuesday morning who escaped custody Monday.
Curtis Bunnell, 38, of Oskaloosa, escaped from Ottumwa Monday with the assistance of Latisha Bunnell, 27. They were arrested at 1 a.m. Tuesday in Oskaloosa, according a press release from the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office.
“We found them at 613 Fifth Avenue West,” Oskaloosa Police Chief John “Jake” McGee said. “I don’t believe it was their home.”
“He was hiding in the residence,” McGee added. Bunnell did not resist, he added.
Bunnell escaped from the Wapello County Courthouse, McGee said.
The police chief said that Bunnell has been in trouble with the law in Mahaska County.
“He does have a past history,” McGee said.
McGee said Bunnell’s apprehension was a “unique” situation.
Since Bunnell was an escapee and the fact that he was going to court for an armed robbery, the magnitude of the charges necessitated bringing several law enforcement agencies on board to capture him.
The Oskaloosa Police, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol assisted Wapello County Sheriff’s deputies in capturing Bunnell and his accomplice.
Both Bunnells are being held in the Wapello County Jail.
