OSKALOOSA —
At Monday’s Oskaloosa City Council meeting, council members approved a resolution of support for a Vision Iowa Grant application by the Mahaska County Conservation Board for the Caldwell Park Improvement Project.
This approval of this agenda does not obligate the city to make any budgetary consideration at this time.
MCCB would like to apply for Vision Iowa grant money to offset construction expenses associated with improvements to Caldwell Park, east of Oskaloosa. According to an explanation of the agenda item at Monday’s meeting, a resolution of support is necessary to indicate the level of interest by the community and stake holders.
MCCB Executive Director David Sedivec gave a presentation to further explain what MCCB intends to do at Caldwell Park.
Sedivec began by noting that MCCB’s main building right now is out at Russell Wildlife Area, north of Oskaloosa. He said this building was built in 1986.
Since that time, MCCB programs have expanded, noted Sedivec. MCCB went from having 140 school programs a year to 450 school programs each year. He also noted that about 14,000 participants now take part in these programs every year.
A new building being proposed at the Caldwell Park site would be a 12,000-square-foot facility on two floors.
Sedivec said he’s also like to see trails at Caldwell Park connect up with the Recreation Trail that encircles Oskaloosa.
The North Mahaska Community School District, Oskaloosa School District and William Penn University have issued letters of support for MCCB’s efforts thus far, said Sedivec.
Grants in addition to the Vision Iowa Grant will also be sought for the Caldwell Park Project, said Sedivec.
“Right now, we’re just in the beginning stages of our fund raising,” said Sedivec.
Councilwoman Scottie Moore said she thinks MCCB’s effort is a “great idea.”
Should the new building at Caldwell Park come to fruition, Sedivec said the MCCB building at Russell Wildlife would continue to be used.
