OSKALOOSA —
The Penn Central Mall was converted to a mini-golf course this weekend as the YMCA held its inaugural Osky Winter Open.
Eighteen holes of mini-putt golf were set up around the mall and people of all ages could enjoy playing a round of golf indoors away from single-digit weather outside.
The two-day event is a fund-raiser for the Mahaska County YMCA. Volunteers from local businesses set up 18 holes Friday and the course was open Friday afternoon and evening, and all day Saturday.
YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins said the course was locked down from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday night so Mahaska County middle school students could enjoy some golf.
“It’s a reason to get outside,” said Linda Crookham-Hansen, who was part of the committee that organized the event. “It’s to raise money for the YMCA and provide an activity for the community.”
Crookham-Hansen was pleased with the turnout Friday evening and was excited about having the middle school students come to the course.
Crookham-Hansen also was pleased with local business support for the event.
“The local businesses outdone themselves,” she said.
There were 18 businesses to sponsor holes and six others were event sponsors, she said.
There are some businesses who are planning for the event next year, Crookham-Hansen added.
Several Oskaloosa families were out Friday evening to play a round of golf.
Kara Denburger and her family teed up on Clow Valve’s Hole 1.
“They’re all golfers. I’m just terrible,” she said after she hit a ball.
Mindy Hoskinson and her family also played a round of golf Friday evening. Her family has some experience playing mini-golf.
“We went a couple times out at Vennard,” she said in reference to the mini-putt course that used to be at Vennard College in University Park.
“It’s a good idea,” Hoskinson said of the event. “We always do something as a family on Friday night. It’s fun.”
