OSKALOOSA —
A variety of Halloween characters laced up their jogging shoes at the Lacey Complex Stadium Saturday morning for the inaugural YMCA Freaky 5K.
The morning started at 8 a.m. with a one mile fun run for kids and then the Freaky 5K stepped off at 9 a.m.
“It’s the last 5K of the year,” YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins said.
There were about 65 runners registered for the 5K and six children registered for the fun run. Many of the participants were dressed up in costumes, YMCA Fitness Director Ryan Harkema said.
While the participants were there to have fun, the races were a timed competition. Representatives of Open Road Chip Timing, of Des Moines, inserted computer chips in runners’ shoes in order to record their times on the running course. The runners started the course on the stadium football field and ran around the athletic fields at the Lacey Complex as well as the Oskaloosa Elementary School before crossing the finish line at the stadium. The winners in various classes received medals and prizes.
Harkema said Clow Valve Co. co-sponsored the event and there were six other sponsors to help organize the event.
Also, there were many volunteers on hand, such as the William Penn University cross country and track teams, to help with the event.
