The Oskaloosa Bandstand, along with C.L. Barnhouse Company, were recognized for their contributions Thursday night.
Following the Sweet Corn Serenade, the Oskaloosa City Band performed in honor of the bandstand’s 100th anniversary and the positive impact C.L. Barnhouse Company has had on the community. C.L. Barnhouse Company is now in its 126th year of music publishing.
Andy Glover, who serves as staff composer, arranger, editor, and Chief Operating Officer at C.L. Barnhouse Company, was on hand at the Iowa Building on the Oskaloosa square Thursday just prior to the band concert. On display there were numerous items relevant to the history of music in Oskaloosa.
Among these items were historic photos, clippings from issues of The Oskaloosa Herald as well as a hat and conductor’s baton once used by C.L. Barnhouse. Also on display was a metal printing plate, along with a hammer and musical character tools used to create sheet music.
“It’s nice to get them out for something like this,” said Glover of the historic items. “People can actually get a chance to see some of them.”
Glover said a lot of people passed through the Iowa Building Thursday evening before the Oskaloosa City Band played their 8 p.m. concert. He said former city band members and their family members who came to the Iowa Building on Thursday were especially appreciative of some of these items. Glover said they pointed out relatives of theirs featured in some of the newer historic items from just 25 or 30 years ago.
“It’s been really nice to see everybody coming through,” said Glover.
As Thursday’s concert began, the Oskaloosa city square remained filled with listeners of all ages.
In between pieces of music, Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt shared some insights into Oskaloosa’s musical history. Hayley Dursky, now in her sixth year with the city band, helped introduce some of the pieces of music at Thursday’s concert alongside Krutzfeldt. Dursky is a third generation city band member. Her father Mike plays tuba with the Oskaloosa City Band while her grandmother Andrea serves as a vocalist with the band.
