More than 200 children learn about the great outdoors

OSKALOOSA — Education and fun were the focus at Russell Wildlife Area this past Saturday.

The annual Youth Outdoor Field Day at Russell Wildlife Area included a lot of outdoor education for children. Activities at the all-day event included a station where children could learn about bow fishing from the Iowa Bowfishing Association, one where they learned about animal pelts, as well as an archery range.

This year, there were two new activities, including a wildlife identification and safety trail, which was organized by the Mahaska County Pheasants Forever.

Laura De Cook, a naturalist with the Mahaska County Conservation Board, explained how the trail worked by saying there were stations along the trail with animal decoys like deer.

“It’s discussed with the kids — what is a safe way to shoot and what isn’t,” explained De Cook. “They learn some hunting ethics and safety and also wildlife identification.”

Another new addition to this year’s Youth Outdoor Field Day was organized by MCCB Director Dave Sedivec. He put up a wilderness hunting camp, which included a canvas-wall tent, cook shack tent and fire ring. There was also a mule with a pack saddle on it, as well as a horse, De Cook said. She said this was to show children what could be used when, for example, one would go elk hunting out West. This particular station also educated some parents, De Cook noted.

“The kids can go in the tents and they can pet the animals,” said De Cook. “The parents are asking questions, too.”

Numerous volunteers and conservation-oriented organizations participated in Saturday’s activities at Russell Wildlife Area. The local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, known as the Mahaska Fan Club, helped out with the archery range. Those with the Izaak Walton League headed up the BB gun and rifle range. There are also many, many sponsors for the event.

“This whole event is possible with all of their help,” said De Cook.

De Cook said between 200 and 220 children were at this year’s Youth Outdoor Field Day.

“It’s a fun day and they’re all excited,” De Cook said.

Todd Koenig and his son, Nicholas, both of Oskaloosa, were among those enjoying the activities, including the bow fishing education activity.

“It’s good fun — a lot better than sitting in front of the TV,” said Todd as Nicholas took a few bow shots at a floating target.
