It will help track and field athletes get off on the right foot.
This past Saturday, the William Penn University Booster Club sponsored the first-annual Duck Plucker’s Ball. The fund-raising event is helping the university purchase track and field equipment for the stadium at the Lacey Recreation Complex. Some of this equipment includes high jump hurdles and the long jump pit, along with other equipment typically used during a track meet.
William Penn Athletic Director Greg Hafner said the there will be several track and field events at the stadium at the Lacey Recreation Complex this coming spring. He said events like these draw a lot of out-of-town visitors, which is good for the local economy.
“It is great for the local economy,” said Hafner. “We saw what the stadium did for us last year by bringing lots of people. We’re running more and more events out there.”
Penn President Dr. Ann Fields said the equipment will be greatly appreciated at upcoming track and field events.
The day kicked off with field games at the Izaak Walton League, which included a sporting clay shoot, quail walk and the Presidential Challenge with Fields. A “wild culinary creations” contest, dinner, live and silent auctions, as well as a dance were held at Penn Central Mall Saturday evening.
Some of the bid items at the auction included hunting or fishing trips at Burson’s Delta Resort in Michigan and the opportunity to commission an original portrait of bidders hunting dogs, pets or spouses. The events at the mall also featured a raffle drawing.
A considerable list of sponsors backed the Duck Pluckers Ball’s inaugural event. A full list of these sponsors can be found at http://www.wmpenn.edu/duckpluckers.
“It’s just been amazing — the amount of support we’ve had and different businesses that have come forward and sponsored some of the silent auction things,” said Fields.
Hafner agreed and expressed appreciation for everyone involved in making the first Duck Plucker’s Ball come to life.
“It’s not just a Penn thing,” Hafner said. “For the first year, we think this is a really good turnout.”
