OSKALOOSA —
At the 2012 What’s Right in Healthcare Conference in October, Mahaska Health Partnership was honored with an Excellence in Patient Care Award for showing the most improvement in overall patient experience.
To ensure that MHP is always striving to provide the best care possible, the healthcare organization uses surveys and assessments to measure patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey is a national, standardized and public survey used by MHP.
“The award we received was given by the Studer Group based on our hospital patient HCAHPS scores between 2011 and 2012,” said MHP Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Keuning, RN, BSN, MS, NE-BC. “The scores were based on the overall rating our patients gave us regarding their experience and the care they received at MHP.
The Studer Group works with healthcare organizations to help them achieve exceptional clinical, financial and operational success. According to the standards set by the Studer Group and indicated by the HCAHPS surveys, MHP has implemented several strategies to help improve patient care.
“In an effort to make healthcare personal for our patients, visitors and staff, we have focused on discharge planning, increased patient education opportunities, implemented hourly rounding requirements with more visits from nursing leaders and created protocols for increasing responsiveness of staff along with other changes,” said Keuning.
Patients responded to these changes when they received their HCAHPS surveys after being discharged. The survey is randomly distributed to patients between 48 hours and six weeks after discharge. Patients then return the surveys to our patient satisfaction survey vendor to be calculated.
“This award shows the strategic planning and hard work our staff has committed to providing on a daily basis is paying off,” said Keuning. “MHP is continuing to grow and improve through the dedication of our healthcare team and the loyalty of our communities.”
