OSKALOOSA —
The Second Annual Osky Winter Open — Mini-Putt Fore the YMCA was, again, a successful event for the community.
Participation increased for all activities with over 400 people playing the course over the two days.
“The first annual Two-person Tournament was a big success with 20 teams taking to the links over Friday’s lunch hour. The friendly competition between the teams was a great way to kick off the two days,” said Matt Sherlock, committee member.
The tournament winners were David Ahmad and Joe Crookham. The second place team was Jason Shafer and Chris Roach. Ryan Bandstra and Jacob Dalbey came in third.
The committee spent a lot of time working specifically on the Middle School night to encourage more kids to come enjoy the evening. The lower cost, addition of Wii activitities, music and lighting, were well received. Attendance was nearly triple of the first year.
“We have a great group of kids in this community and its fun to create an extra activity in the community just for them. We look forward to getting input from them on how to make next year’s even better,” said Linda Crookham-Hansen, event chair.
“Sponsors, participants, mall merchants, and volunteers all had wonderful comments about the event. We are all pleased with the success,” said Dawn Collins, YMCA Executive Director.
The Green Fees brought in over $2,700 and sponsorships brought in $13,500 for a total of more than $16,100 raised to support the Mahaska County YMCA.
Cablevey Conveyors won the “People’s Choice” award. It was a close race between Cablevey and ICI, the 2012 People’s Choice winner.
“The competitive talk between the hole designers was fun to listen to. I can’t wait to see what the third year brings from our businesses,” said Sharon DeKock, committee member.
“I would like to thank everyone who supported the event — sponsors, volunteers and community members who played golf. But I especially thank the committee who put so much time and effort into planning and carrying out this event. The Y is fortunate to have so many people dedicated to our success,” said Collins.
Event proceeds will benefit the Mahaska YMCA efforts to enhance the Y with long overdue additions and updates. For more information about YMCA programs or to join the Y, go to the Mahaska County YMCA website at www.mahaskaymca.org or call at (641) 673-8411.
