OSKALOOSA —
They’re working their way toward better fitness opportunities for Oskaloosa students.
On Thursday, three different donations were made for a cardio room on the second floor of the Oskaloosa High School gym. $10,000 came from the George Daily Family Trust, $5,000 came from Mahaska County Community Foundation and $5,000 came from the Oskaloosa Indian Booster Club.
“It’s awesome,” said OHS Physical Education Teacher Cyndy Gray. “Without our donors, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”
Gray and fellow OHS Physical Education teacher Ginny Foster agreed that efforts to establish a cardio room at the high school date back to the mid-1990s. However, these efforts picked up steam in January of this year, noted Foster.
The area that will become the cardio room was once used as an art room. It also served as a place where students once learned nursing essentials. The nursing essentials classroom is now located at the Indian Hills Community College Career Academy.
Gray noted that there has been a lot of grant writing in order to help fund the cardio room and its equipment. Foster added that area businesses have also been asked to contribute donations for the project.
Foster said the school plans to open the cardio room this coming fall complete with 11 pieces of equipment including dumbbells, stability balls, medicine balls, upright bicycles, tred mills, a concept rower and elliptical machines, among others.
