OSKALOOSA —
Shirley Stursma retired from the Mahaska County Conservation Board Friday after being the go-to office staffer for more than a decade.
Stursma was the MCCB administrative assistant who kept the Russell Wildlife Area office running smoothly.
Stursma did myriad tasks around the office such as taking phone messages, tracking cabin rentals and campground receipts, recording conservation board meeting minutes and keeping track of expenditures.
“It’s been very interesting,” she said.
Stursma did part-time office duties in 1998 and 1999. In 2011, the conservation board made the administrative assistant position a permanent part-time job and Stursma was chosen to fill the role.
Stursma served under MCCB directors Perry Thostensen, Mike Gipple and Dave Sedivec.
Sedivec reflected on the Stursma did while he’s been director.
“She really helped me, coming in new,” he said. “She made things easy for me.”
Stursma made the MCCB office “a family atmosphere,” Sedivec said. “She the matriarch.”
Jennifer Snyder is the new administrative assistant at the MCCB office at Russell Wildlife Area. Stursma trained her to take over.
“Jennifer has big shoes to fill,” Sedivec said. “(Stursma) is the only administrative assistant out here.”
MCCB Chairman Leroy Nugteren presented Stursma a plaque with Sedivec and MCCB member Peggy Wright looking on during a reception held in her honor at held at Russell Wildlife Area Sunday afternoon.
