Policy language causes some concern
OSKALOOSA — The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors came into disagreement with the Secondary Roads Union’s grievance at its meeting Monday morning.
The union made a grievance when some language in the insurance policy had changed without its knowledge.
Auxient, the health insurance company, has admitted the changes were accidental.
Both sides’ lawyers had previously met to resolve the grievance but have different interpretations of how the policy reads.
“We had a meeting to settle this and now we are interpreting the results differently,” said Supervisor Greg Gordy, who had considered the matter settled.
Supervisor Willie Van Weelden said it is necessary to make sure every county worker has the same coverage.
“I don’t think it’s fair to the rest of the employees in the county to be left with a certain language [in the insurance policy] and the union to have their own language,” he said.
In other action, the board received an update on the Courthouse security camera project.
The 911 Center and Emergency Management requested the purchase of a new camera to help with severe weather. The 911 Center said it would contribute $1,000 and the Emergency Management said it would contribute $500.
The cost of the camera is between $1,800 and $2,000.
County Engineer Jerry Nusbaum requested three items.
The first request was for three trucks to be added to the county’s fleet. The board received quotes from Clemons for two 2008 three-quarter ton work trucks for $21,963 and one 2008 three-quarter ton extended cab truck for $26,963.
The board approved the purchase 3-0.
The board heard a request for the Barnes City street project to be on the agenda for the fiscal year 2009. The project is for Spruce Street between the V13 intersection to just east of Broadway Street. The cost is projected to be about $167,000.
The board approved the project 2-1 with Gordy opposing.
The last request was for a two-stage, 250 horsepower loader mounted snow blower. Nusbaum looked at three different options. The chosen snow blower was a SNOGO for $123,100.
The board also requested finals bids to be sent to it for a final approval.
The next Board of Supervisors meeting is at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 in the third floor conference room of the Mahaska County Courthouse.
