OSKALOOSA —
Rain didn’t stop their good deeds.
Numerous volunteer-fueled projects were underway throughout the Oskaloosa area Thursday during United Way of Mahaska County’s Day of Caring.
Katie Schippers, community impact coordinator with United Way of Mahaska County, said that although the rainy conditions prevented some of the outdoor volunteer projects from being done Thursday, many of them have been postponed for selected days next week. She said some of these project sites will be able to get volunteers to visit them for longer periods of time and that they would get more individual attention, as well.
Many of the projects that did move forward throughout the day on Thursday included indoor painting efforts. The Mahaska County YMCA and the United Way of Mahaska County office were among the places getting some painting done. Schippers said “a lot of nice makeovers at different sites” were being done Thursday.
One of the numerous project locations on Thursday was the Nelson Pioneer Farm. Schippers said William Penn University student volunteers would be on site to help prepare the farm for this Saturday’s Fall Festival. This was the first time United Way of Mahaska County has paired up with Penn for this particular project, noted Schippers.
“We’re really excited to have them,” she said.
For this year’s set of Day of Caring projects, 190 people signed up to volunteer their time for 23 different projects, said Schippers. These volunteers came from numerous businesses and organizations in the area.
“It is such a neat time for people who work in the office to see each other in a different light,” said Schippers, adding that volunteers had the opportunity to learn about area non-profit organizations on Thursday, as well.
