OSKALOOSA —
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach officials came to Oskaloosa Tuesday to learn about local needs and to educate the public on how extension officials can help communities.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach brings resources together to serve local communities throughout the state. Extension Vice President Cathann Kress, Iowa Association of County Extension Councils Terry Maloy and ISU College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez held a town hall meeting at the ISU Extension office to learn about area needs.
Kress said ISU Extension’s “core DNA” is composed of education to best address challenges and work at the local level to develop solutions.
ISU Extension has four issue areas of focus — economic development, health and well-being, food and the environment, and K-12 youth outreach, Kress said.
ISU’s College of Design is now working through the Extension service to help local communities. Rico-Gutierrez said that elements of design are found in almost everything people use. The College of Design can help businesses add value to their products through the industrial process. College officials also can add value to the community through educational programs at the local level.
“What the country needs is innovation,” he said.
