OSKALOOSA —
When you’re young, staying up all night can be less of a challenge than it is later in life.
That’s why the Oskaloosa After Prom 2012 Committee wants to provide a safe and fun environment for students from midnight to 5 a.m. April 21 at the Penn Activities Center after the Oskaloosa High School Prom.
“It just keeps them from being on the streets and driving around and maybe going to alcoholic parties,” said Cindy Martin, president of the Oskaloosa After Prom 2012 Committee. “It’s just a fun, safe thing for them to do.”
Martin said that donations from parents of junior and senior parents, as well as others, for the event are being accepted now.
So, why collect donations now?
Martin explained that there is a lot that goes into planning the after-prom party, including putting down deposits for the rental of inflatable equipment and a hypnotist. Last year, funding for the after-prom party was lower than in previous years, something Martin said could be attributed to the state of the economy.
What helps make the after-prom party in Oskaloosa safe is the involvement of the Oskaloosa Police Department, Martin said. She said the OPD, along with parents of the students help chaperone the event. The police also donate funding toward the after-prom party, said Martin.
Those interested in donating to the after-prom party can send their tax-deductable donation to Kim Lowry, 310 Northshore Dr., Oskaloosa, IA, 52577. Make checks payable to the Oskaloosa Police Association After Prom Party.
