OSKALOOSA —
The Iowa Barnstormers are going to be very busy both on and off the gridiron during their stay in Oskaloosa.
The Iowa Barnstormers are an Arena Football League football team that is moving from their home in Des Moines to Oskaloosa for their two-week training camp from Feb. 19 through March 3.
The team’s first practice is on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Penn Activity Center on the William Penn University campus. Once they are done, they will have a Meet and Greet activity at Penn Central Mall at 5 p.m.
The Barnstormers and their cheerleaders will have dinner at Napoli’s restaurant in Penn Central Mall at 5 p.m., once they are done eating, they will have a Meet and Greet with the public at the mall’s Center Court.
“It’s going to be a big event,” Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group Executive Director Jon Sullivan said.
Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt will greet the team, coaches and cheerleaders to start the event, Sullivan said. William Penn University President Ann Fields and William Penn Vice President of Advancement Sherri Taylor also will greet the team on behalf of the university.
The William Penn University Pep Band also will be on hand to fire up the players and the public for an autograph session at the mall. Besides autographing everything under the sun, the team will have a variety of goodies to give back to the public.
The Barnstormers will practice at the William Penn University PAC for two weeks. Taylor said the public is welcome to watch the Barnstormers practice every day from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. However, no cameras or recording equipment will be allowed — the team does not want its practices ending up on YouTube or the Internet, she added.
When the team is not on the practice field, they will be interacting with people in the community.
