OSKALOOSA —
Blues guitar slinger Pete Neuman wants to inspire children.
On Friday morning, Neuman stopped at Oskaloosa Elementary School to speak about the basics of guitar playing and songwriting. Neuman said he started playing at around the same age as the 50 or so fourth-grade students he spoke to.
“I ended up starting when I was 8 or 9 years old,” explained Neuman. “Kids that age are pretty receptive to the fun aspect of playing music.”
While discussing the different elements of songwriting and guitar playing, Neuman also answered a litany of questions from students captivated by his guitar playing. In between periods of questions and answers, Neuman played several guitar standards including Robert Johnson’s “Cross Road Blues.”
Neuman also described for the children the mechanics of how a guitar works, as well as essential elements to every guitar-based song.
“I like to visit students and just talk about music principles like melody and rhythm,” said Neuman. “I want to show them how much fun it is to play music.”
