OSKALOOSA —
Working in Oskaloosa has been a good fit for this local entrepreneur.
At 28 years old, Sarah Vos, owner of Sarah’s Therapeutic Massage, has found that working in Oskaloosa is a good fit. Vos was born in Pella, grew up in Peoria and graduated from Pella High School. After earning her massage training in Urbandale at Body Wisdom, she would eventually set up shop at Tropical Rayz Salon and Tanning, 110 First Ave. E.
Vos said her experience at Body Wisdom was a positive one right from the start, noting that the instructors were very personable and confident in what they were teaching.
When asked why she chose to go into massage therapy, Vos said that for much of her life she’s enjoyed giving back massages and that it made sense to her to make a career out if it. After researching a few schools, Vos chose Body Wisdom.
One of the best things about choosing massage therapy as a career was the fact that her family fully supported Vos along the way during her training.
“That was a huge thing for me,” she said.
The support that she continues to get from family and friends these days is one of the biggest reasons why she chose to operate her business in Oskaloosa. Vos said she actually lived in Des Moines for a period of time before coming to Oskaloosa. She said being there just didn’t work for her.
Her husband, Jason, introduced Vos to Amy Strausser, owner of Tropical Rayz Salon and Tanning, who then offered Vos a space to do massage therapy.
Being personable is important to Vos. She said that when customers come in they will be greeted with a smile and will be able to feel comfortable with the surroundings at Tropical Rayz Salon and Tanning.
Vos said she enjoys her work because she’s able to relate to people while she works.
Vos noted that there are different styles of massage that massage therapists use. At Body Wisdom, instruction in numerous massage therapy styles were offered, which Vos said was another added benefit. She said it’s also important to take continuing education classes when working in the massage therapy industry.
“There is so much you can keep learning about the body and whatnot,” said Vos. “I’m a willing learner. I love learning new things when it comes to massage.”
