  • Art Show Art improves thinking in children

    Just over 100 artists coming from kindergarten through fifth grade had their art on display at the Iowa Building this past Wednesday as part of the Up & Coming Artist Reception. This was the first event in several that were held under the umbrella of the Skunk River Arts Festival, which also included Art on the Square. Children from Oskaloosa Elementary School, as well as North Mahaska Elementary School had their work ready to be viewed by the public.

  • Music Square A place to grow musically

    Beth Brostrom, owner and manager of Music Square in Oskaloosa, has quite the musical background — one that she uses to instruct students of various ability levels. According to a Music Square brochure, Brostrom has been an accompanist and church organist for more than 30 years locally. It also notes her experience taking classes in piano, organ, music composition, as well as songwriting at area colleges. When it comes to teaching, she’s been instructing students on guitar and piano for more than 20 years.

  • OMS Softball Photo: Oskaloosa Middle School Softball debuts at Lacey Oskaloosa Middle School Eighth grade girl’s softball team hosted their first game at the Lacey Recreation Complex Thursday, June 6. With damp conditions this spring numerous games have been canceled or reschedule. The 5-plex at Lacey Recreation Complex is equipped with Shakopee Red Ball Diamond Aggregate and geared to drain effectively in a timely manner. The Indians took on the Pella Christian Eagles at 10 a.m. Pictured above, Indian pitcher, Josie Bunnell, fires in a strike as the Eagles look to steal third.   • City band to perform marches by King, Sousa

    The Oskaloosa City Band’s next concert is Thursday, June 13, at 8 p.m. on the Oskaloosa City Square. The band will play marches by Karl King and John Philip Sousa.

  • Art on the Square Wooden goods offered at Art on the Square

    Eves Cadwallader, of Oskaloosa, has offered wooden goods of several kinds including canes and cutting boards at Art on the Square for the past half dozen years or so. Family members, including Eves' wife Iola, have come to Art on the Square to discuss and sell these wooden pieces alongside him.

  • Art on the Square Art on the Square to feature more than 40 artists

    Sue Lynn, chairwoman of Art on the Square, said the event has been held for more than 40 years. This year there will be around 45 artists on the square, said Lynn. This will be accompanied by several children’s activities, as well.
