WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —
Howard A Barnes, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.
He was born in Mahaska County on April 23, 1925, and left the farm at age 38. He was awarded a Ph. D from University of Iowa with a Woodrow Wilson scholarship. He retired last May after teaching 42 years at WSSU. He published many historical articles and book reviews.
He was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by wife Mary and children: Drew Barnes, of Alaska, Pam Harnack, of Iowa, Julie (David) Stickel, of Chapel Hill, and step-children Ben (Wendy) Bellus, of Iowa, Deborah (Robert) MacDonald, of Texas, and Andrea (Jeff) Newcomer, of Missouri, as well as 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2:30 p.m. at Burkhead United Methodist Church on Silas Creek Pkwy.
