KENNETH HANNA

DEC. 1, 1923 — NOV. 13, 2009

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Kenneth Clyde Hanna, 85, Rapid City, S.D., passed away on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 5, at Forest Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Kleven of St. James Episcopal Church officiating. A visitation will be held from 9-9:45 a.m. at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel, at which time a procession will depart for the cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Rapid City Club for Boys.

Ken was born on the family farm Dec. 1, 1923, to Clyde and Lucille (Hicks) Hanna. He attended one room school through the eighth grade. Going into town to Oskaloosa High School was a big step towards maturity. Graduating from OHS, he enrolled at the University of Iowa.

World War II interrupted his schooling, when a draft board sent him back to the farm to grow food. At the end of the war, he returned to school. He met and married Mary Steward on Aug. 30, 1945. Living in a trailer on campus, he graduated from the University in June 1949. Hired by the FDIC, he began his 43 year career in banking by examining banks. He joined Northwest Bank, and came to Rapid City. He earned his masters degree from Rutgers University.

In 1962, he accepted an offer from a bank in California and he and Mary moved their family of three daughters and one son to Southern California.

In 1976, he married Lois Fergusson. In 1981, he took early retirement, and they moved to his home town, Oskaloosa, where he resumed his banking career. They spent the winter in California and the summer in Iowa.

Ken played golf until his health made it too difficult. He then resumed woodworking in earnest. He especially liked making furniture. Ken was a past member of the Elks Club and Masonic groups.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Hanna, Rapid City; daughters: Kathleen Larsen, Santa Rosa, Calif., Cheryl Taylor, Corona, Calif., Johnetta Davis, San Bernardino, Calif.; step daughter Kathleen Bley, Auburn, Wash.; son Scott Hanna, San Bernardino, Calif.; stepson Jim Fergusson, Anchorage, Alaska; 6 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 5 step grandsons, 2 step-granddaughters, 9 great-grandsons, 6 great-granddaughters, 9 step great-grandsons, and 4 step great-granddaughters.
