HAZEL VANDERLINDEN

OSKALOOSA — Hazel A. Vanderlinden, 102, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. 

She was born Feb. 8, 1910, in Leighton, the daughter of Tunis and Jacoba Van Driel Brom. Early on, she moved to Oskaloosa and worked various jobs. In 1927, she began working for the telephone company. On July 24, 1929, she was united in marriage to Marion C. Vanderlinden at Oskaloosa; he died June 22, 1983. Following their marriage, Hazel stayed home to care for her family. After her children were in school, she worked for a short time at the old Continental Overall Factory. In 1953, she went back to work for the telephone company and stayed there until her retirement in 1972. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, word search puzzles, reading and traveling. Hazel was a very talented seamstress; she did alterations for people in her home and made several dance costumes. She was a member of the Fellowship Bible Church and the Telephone Pioneers.

Hazel is survived by her two children and their spouses, Linda and Garry Reighard, of Oskaloosa, and Marion and Meg Vanderlinden, of Perry; a step daughter, Donna Lehman, of Bozeman, Mont.; eight grandchildren, Cheryl (and Mark) Camos, Paul Vanderlinden, Curtis Reighard, Brent Vanderlinden, Kim Vanderlinden, Wendy Kenyon, Terry Vanderlinden and Mary Vest; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Paul Vanderlinden; a step daughter, Norma Tucker; a sister, Stella McClun; two brothers, Barney and Jake Brom.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Rodney DeRonde officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will begin Friday morning after 10 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and continue until 5 p.m. on Friday. The family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Saturday morning from 10 until service time at 11. Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa.
