BUD GARNER

SEPT. 12, 1925 — JAN. 26, 2013

OSKALOOSA — William Donald “Bud” Garner, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Oskaloosa. 

He was born Sept. 12, 1925, at Armstrong, Mo., the son of Stephen P. and Margaret E. Black Garner. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, midway through his senior year of high school. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Oskaloosa and went to work first for Case Company and Goodyear. He later operated a Sinclair service station in Oskaloosa. In December of 1947, he was united in marriage to Beverly Lane at Stockport; Beverly died May 16, 2004. In 1975, they moved to Chariton where Bud owned and operated the Gambles Store. In the late 2000s, he moved back to Oskaloosa. He enjoyed fishing and camping. Bud was a very talented horse trainer and showman. He was very well known in his early years for training and showing American Saddlebred horses.

He is survived by his grandson and his wife, Michael and Catherine Garner, of Oak Park, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Isabella, Matthew and Nathaniel Garner; a brother, John Garner, of Oskaloosa; and a sister, Edith Rice, of Oskaloosa.

In addition to his wife, Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William Garner; a brother, Bob Garner; and a brother-in-law, Neal Rice.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 2:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Graveside military honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday after 4 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
