ROLAND L. ANDERSON

SEPT. 26, 1920 — FEB. 16, 2013

OSKALOOSA — Roland L. Anderson, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Room in Oskaloosa. 

He was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Mahaska County the son of Axel and Hilma Anderson. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1938. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, including a tour in the Burma Theatre. On Jan. 30, 1941, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Bunting in Mahaska County; Eleanor died Feb. 12, 2012. They made their home in Oskaloosa and Roland went to work for General Mills. When General Mills left Oskaloosa he sold insurance for a time. He then took an accounting position at Norris Construction in Ottumwa, where he worked for 17 years. Lastly, he owned and operated Town and Country Realty in Oskaloosa until his retirement in 2003. Early in life, Roland enjoyed hunting and being in the out of doors. He and Eleanor also enjoyed traveling, and taking road trips to see the countryside. He also enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and the VFW.

His family includes his two children and their spouses, Cheryl and Geoff Smith, of Windsor, Colo., and Stuart and Carla Anderson, of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren, Jessica (and Eric) Howard, Matt (and Wendy) Smith and Alex Smith; five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Peyton, and Emily Howard and Geoffery and Jacqueline Smith.

In addition to his wife, Roland was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Nicole Anderson; and a sister, Frances Anderson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
