MARVIN VAN ENGELENHOVEN

JAN. 17, 1925 — JAN. 22, 2012

OSKALOOSA — Marvin Van Engelenhoven, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. 

He was born Jan. 17, 1925, at Tracy, the son of John R. and Nellie Goemaat Van Engelenhoven. He attended school in Mahaska County, completing eighth grade with honors. Early on, he helped on the family farm and drove a Star Mail Route. On Nov. 9, 1949, he was united in marriage to June I. Penelerick at Pella; June died Dec. 22, 1976. In January of 1955, he went to work at Rolscreen (now Pella Corporation), he retired from there in November of 1989, after 34 years of service. In February of 1978, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Wineland, they later divorced. In retirement Marvin enjoyed going to coffee with his friends, and collecting die cast tractors, he especially liked John Deere. Marvin was a regular at Happy Joe’s, later Pizza Ranch, where he had lunch everyday with friends and acquaintances. He also enjoyed evening meals at Wendy’s. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. Family was the center of Marvin’s life. He and June took care of his aging mother in their home, and he delighted in spending time with his family. Visits from his great grand puppy Bentley, brightened his days while at Crystal Heights.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband: Barbara and David Dickinson, of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren: Ryan (and Lisa) Dickinson, Heather Dickinson, Shawna Van Engelenhoven, and Kylee (and Danny) Koogler; and a sister-in-law: Jeanette Van Engelenhoven, of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son Mark Van Engelenhoven; a brother: Everett Van Engelenhoven; three sisters and their husbands: Jennie (Lewis) Van Donselaar, Dorothy (Bernard) Meinders, Johanna (Ernest) Van Haaften; a sister in infancy; three half brothers: Bastian (Gertie) Van Woerkom, Guy (Alice) Van Woerkom and John Van Engelenhoven.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Cancer Connection or the Central United Methodist Church.
