FREMONT — Rex Blair Hedge, 93, of Fremont, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa.

He was born Sunday, Dec. 22, 1918, in Oskaloosa the son of Harry and Ava Blair Hedge. He graduated from Fremont High School with the class of 1936. Following graduation he began farming until joining the Navy in 1942. Following his discharge, he went back to the Fremont area to continue farming. On June 18, 1947, he was united in marriage to Bernice Ver Ploeg at her parents’ home west of Leighton. He continued farming until his retirement about 10 years ago. Rex was a member of the Fremont United  Methodist Church, a former board member of Leisure Living, Farmer’s Savings Bank in Fremont, Fremont Funeral Chapel, Fremont School Board and a township trustee. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, and traveling with Bernice.  

Rex’s family includes his wife: Bernice Hedge, of Fremont; a son: Bruce Hedge, of Big Lake, Minn.; a daughter: Becky Sterling, of Fremont; 4 granddaughters: Mackenzie Hedge, of Big Lake, Minn., Nichole Sterling, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jennifer Sterling (and Peter) Krebs, of New York City, and Kara (and Chris) Gately, of Palmer, Alaska; a brother: Kay (and Alleen) Hedge, of Fremont; a niece and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Mary Ellen Hedge and Dorothy May Tungate.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Fremont United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ronald Bupp officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery south of Fremont. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will begin Wednesday after 12 p.m. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the Family will be present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Rex’s name to the Nelson Pioneer Farm or the Fremont United Methodist Church.
